Local Finds

Kinderhook Snacks

Shavise Glascoe

As a mother I am always on the hunt for new snacks to give to my little guy. Ok, that was a lie. As a foodie I am always on the hunt for new snacks for me to enjoy and to sometimes share with my little guy. There, that sounds better. LOL! To my defense, who doesn't love snacks? Who doesn't enjoy eating in between meals? Well, I'll raise my hand (or both) as a proud snack-a-holic!

As a foodie and snacker, I can't just eat the typical bag of chips, trail mix or graham crackers. No, I need something with a little flare and a lot of flavor! With that being said, it only makes perfect sense that I am in absolute love with Kinderhook Snacks.

Although I am writing about Kinderhook Snacks right now, this is by no means a "new" local find for me. I've been living in Baltimore for about six years now and have been enjoying their snacks for pretty much the same length of time. So, why Kinderhook? Here are my Top 5 Reasons why:

1. Unique flavor combinations: Each and every snack that Kinderhook releases is like no other snack that you will find in your typical grocery store. Orange Tarragon Almonds? Chocolate Chili Cookies? Um, YES! And they taste even better than they sound!

2. Quality: Need I say more? A few bites in and I could tell that this company took their craft seriously and made every batch with care.

3. Versatile: Ok, Kinderhook Snacks are SNACKS. But, they can be enjoyed with other foods  OR incorporated in recipes. Take my Harvest Oatmeal for example. The Rosemary Brown Sugar Walnuts added an extra layer of amazing flavor to the dish. A definite must try!

4. Package size: Their snacks come in a great snack size bags. It is the perfect portion size for a satisfying snack. No much and none of that "fun" size business. Side Note: "Fun Size" is never FUN!

5. Online shopping option: This option is great for those who want to try the brand but don't live in the area. So, live in Indiana, and want to try the Rosemary Brown Sugar Walnuts? Visit their website and place an order. Simple as that.

Although I could probably rave about Kinderhook forever, I will let you experience the joy for yourself.

You're Welcome! (Yes, I'm confident enough that you will be thanking me for this recommendation. Haha).

Enjoy!

Woot! Granola

Shavise Glascoe

I absolutely live for the moments when I can blend my profession (exercise physiologist) and passion for food together. So with that being said, Woot! Granola is on my list of favorites. When I shop, the food blogger side of me is looking for a quality product that is full of flavor. All the while, the health professional in me is looking for a product low in sugar and fat (amongst other things). With Woot! Granola, I can finally have my cake (or granola) and eat it too.

Now, this isn't your typical granola that you might find in the cereal aisle of your neighborhood supermarket, this is on a different level (which is why I love small batch products). You can choose from a variety of amazing flavors:

  • Pumpkin Pear Crunch
  • Raisin Walnut
  • Moroccan Fruit & Nut
  • Cherry Pecan
  • Cherry Pecan Wheat Free
  • Almond Lavender (ONE OF MY FAVORITES-IF I WAS FORCED TO CHOOSE)

Whether you enjoy for breakfast, on top of yogurt or by itself, Woot! Granola is a must try. Go and grab a bag today!

Wight Tea Co.

Shavise Glascoe

Growing up I vividly remember drinking a wide variety of teas with my mother on the weekends. It was a special time to catch up and have 'girl talk'. Unfortunately after moving away for college and getting accustomed to the new hustle and bustle of this thing we call 'adulting', I've switched from my relaxing teas to highly charged, coffee.

Although, I feel that it served its purpose in undergraduate/graduate school and the early phases of parenthood, but it was time to give it a rest. Now don't get me wrong, I still love coffee, but I wanted a little more out life (and my beverage selections...lol). So back to tea it was.

In weaning myself off of coffee I've tried a number of teas from the store. You name it, I probably had it (or still have it in my pantry somewhere.......don't judge me). But it never stuck. Either the blends were weak, or just lacking something to reel me in. After trial and error (and more error), I gave up. That was until I met Brittany from Wight Tea Co. at a local creative get together.

After learning more about their teas, I had to give it a try. And boy was that a great choice. I finally found a tea that I greatly enjoyed. Their perfectly crafted blends are something one must experience. The amount of passion and attention to each and every ingredient that goes into every batch is absolutely amazing. It has reignited my passion for tea. You will love it, trust me. Go and check out Wight Tea Co. today and let me know what you think.

Open Eyes Press

Shavise Glascoe

Although I'm a food blogger and tend to focus on recipes and small batch edible products, it would be a crime not to include the amazing home goods brands that I've come across along the way. Between cooking, holiday entertaining and photoshoot prepping, I am almost always on the hunt for the perfect serving dish, glassware or tea towel.

While in the middle of a search, I discovered Open Eyes Press, a vintage inspired home textile company (who also happens to be based out of Baltimore). I would have to be completely honest in saying that it was love at first sight. There is just something about vintage, it speaks to me.

Now outside of the eye catching prints, a few other things jumped out at me. The main one being....QUALITY. There are of ton of brands and products out there, but there is something about a product of high quality. Rachael (the creator of Open Eyes Press), not only designs the prints, but does everything else as well. Yes, she is behind the screen printing, ironing, folding and packaging of each and every towel. Now that is love and passion! The level of pride that goes into this product is simply amazing.

With this blog, I strongly believe in sharing only the best brands and products with you all because you deserve it. Order a tea towel or print from Open Eyes Press today!

Haute Mess Kitchen

Shavise Glascoe

IMG_7051.jpg

When you think of bbq sauce and dry rubs, Baltimore usually isn't the first thing that comes to mind for most people. But I must let you know that you might want to change your mind on this matter. I came across Haute Mess Kitchen during a typical grocery run at the Green Onion Market.

Between the name Haute Mess Kitchen and Bourbon Bath, I was sold. I had to try the whiskey infused bbq sauce. (Don't we all?) Although I do love to make my own sauces, I wanted to give this a try and possibly add it to my list of go tos when in a pinch. With a bottle of bbq sauce in my hand, I also spotted their Island-Inspired Dry Rub....SOLD.

Surprisingly, I find it a little challenging to describe the complex flavor profiles products. Perfectly crafted, I would deem Haute Mess Kitchen products as edible works of art. If you love flavor and love it bold, Haute Mess Kitchen is a must try.

Baltimore Shot Tower Gin

Shavise Glascoe

Outside of wine, gin is my favorite alcoholic beverage (which I don't drink often). Why? I really don't know. I do know that I love it and I would like to say it loves me as well (lol). And no, I don't go crazy like Belinda from Vice Principals (super funny show btw) when I have it.

When I discovered the Baltimore Shot Tower Gin while on a wine run, I had to grab a bottle to add to my bar. I'm not sure what they are doing over at  The Baltimore Whiskey Company but it has to involve magic, because this is the best gin that I've had in a while. Yes, you can expect to see this gin in a few cocktail recipes on the blog.

You're Welcome!

Charm City Meadworks

Shavise Glascoe

The story of how I discovered Charm City Meadworks is a little embarrassing since I consider myself as a pretty smart consumer. Yes, I fell for the pretty bottle that glowed 'just' right in the store. I'm pretty sure the bottle also spoke to me...... "Shavise! Come give me a try.". (Don't judge me, we've all be there in one way or another).

As a lover of wine and new things, the idea of mead (or honey wine) was intriguing. Completely sold out of the original version, I had cinnamon to give a try. And it was life changing.

A year later and I am still a lover of mead. Along with enjoying a glass of mead with dinner or my favorite chocolate, I've also incorporated it into a few of my recipes. If you haven't tried them yet, I suggest you do soon.

Infused Spreads

Shavise Glascoe

IMG_6924.jpg

Infused Spreads, the edible masterpiece created by Emem Moody, is not a new local find for me. I first discovered her spreads a few years ago while on at Zeke's Coffee. At that time I was on an apple butter kick and decided to give this one a try. Of course it was the best decision of my apple butter loving life or else I wouldn't be blogging about it right now.

My excitement and near obsession with their apple butter led me to search for other products they made. Let's just say that I've had the privilege of tasting nearly every product with an Infused Spreads label on it (I plan on getting my hands on the few that I haven't tried yet). So why am I so into Infused Spreads?

5 Reasons why you need Infused Spreads in your pantry RIGHT NOW!

1. Originality: The flavor combinations embody everything that Flavor & Soul stands for. Bold, creative and unlike anything you will ever see (or taste) out there.

2. Quality: I've had a few balsamic reductions, marmalades and jams before, but none compare to the quality of Infused Spreads. The consistency and flavor profiles are beyond amazing.

3. Online Shopping: Don't live in the Baltimore area but still want to give Infused Spreads a try? Hop on their website and you are just a few clicks away from happiness.

4. Versatile: Don't limit spreads to just your morning toast. Add them to pastries, yogurt parfaits, burgers (yes there is one for that)......anything your heart desires. Really let your imagination run wild!

5. You will be a legend...........well sorta. Want to be the hero that saved Christmas dinner or the family cookout? Do you dream of being the master of brunch or best tea party host ever? Take your meals to the next level with Infused Spreads. It will definitely be a crowd pleaser.

You're Welcome!

Relay Foods

Shavise Glascoe

I love all aspects of food. I love eating it, cooking it, writing about it and SHOPPING for it! The joy that I get when shopping at a farmer's market or specialty food store is that of a teenage girl at the mall with a purse full of birthday money and gift cards. I love it (which to some is odd). I know a few people who absolutely dread the trip to the supermarket. Although I consider going to the supermarket a delightful outing most of the time, it can be a little time consuming especially if multiple stores are involved.

A self-proclaimed "supermarket snob" (if that is even a thing), I used to look down on people who would grocery shop online. How could you buy anything that you were planning to eat without first touching or smelling it? Are you just supposed to trust that the grocery store will give you good products? Little did I know that a company by the name of Relay Foods would not only answer those questions, but would change how I shopped for food forever.

At a local event I noticed that there was a vendor passing out food samples. Of course I couldn't skip out on a free food sample. (I love free samples just as much as grocery shopping, but again who doesn't like free food?). Chocolate in hand, I decided to chat it up with the rep to learn more about her company, Relay Foods. It was at this moment that my perception of shopping for groceries online changed.

The run down as to why Relay Foods is a must try for everyone located in the DMV:

  1. Grocery store designed with health in mind.
  2. High quality products
  3. The produce share options are fantastic
  4. You can either pick up your purchase or have it delivered to your doorstep
  5. Reasonable prices (so this isn't just a luxury for the rich and famous)
  6. The site is very easy to navigate (yep, friendly to those who aren't so tech savvy)
  7. Customer support goes beyond a help line. They provide nutrition guidance, recipes and meal plans.
  8. Want to try a recipe? No problem, with one simple click all of the ingredients go straight to your cart
  9. The searching experience is a pleasant one. You can browse the aisles, sales section or even by special diet (i.e. vegan, Paleo)
  10. The local love is real! Not only do many of the products they offer come from local businesses, but you can also see exactly where some of your produce, meat and dairy choices are coming from. (yes, exact map location)

And the list goes on. After shopping with Relay Foods a few times I was sold. A number of the recipes that you see on this blog are made with products from their store. I do go to physical stores for certain items or just to have a little me time (which if you are a mother, you will understand how this classifies as me time). If you hate grocery shopping, have a busy lifestyle, want to try healthy/easy to make recipes, love to support local businesses or simply want to try something new, Relay Foods is for you.

Gundalow Juice

Shavise Glascoe

Flavor and Soul is a labor of love, a hobby that I am very passionate about. In other words, this is NOT my day job. During the day I am actually an Exercise Physiologist and lecture at a local university (yes, 2 jobs). With that being said, you can say that I am health conscious and pretty busy. My love of fitness and healthy living ultimately led me to go down that career path. It wasn't until later that I found my passion for food. Some call me a "fit foodie", which is a lot nicer than being called a "health nut".

For a while I tried to keep Flavor and Soul and my career separate. I didn't want this blog to be another super healthy, nutrition crazed site. I wanted the creative freedom to make a kale salad one day and a double cheeseburger the next. But who am I kidding? Most of my day to day food choices are in fact healthy (with room for super flavorful, sometimes fattening fun).

So what does my personal career choice have to do with Gundalow Juice? Everything! I probably wouldn't have found out about this company when I did if it weren't for my being in the health and fitness world.

As a 'fit foodie' and a busy mother, I am constantly in search of healthy meal/snack/drink options that are both delicious and convenient. Over the years, I've mastered meal prepping and had a fairly extensive list of healthy snacks to choose from, but I constantly had issues with getting enough fruits and veggies into my diet when I wasn't at home. I've done fruit cups and some juices, but that grew old very fast. Then there were the cold press juices. From a health standpoint, I loved it. Who wouldn't love a juice that wasn't filled with anything other than fruits and vegetables? Well although the concept was great, the size and cost wasn't. Also, I found it almost impossible to finish an entire bottle while at work, so I gave up.

It wasn't until recently that I began to see posts about Gundalow Juice on social media that I thought about cold press juices again. I first noticed Gundalow Juice on social media back in 2014 (before I was really into cold press juices) when they were just about to launch via a friend. I was familiar with the product before trying.

So why Gundalow Juice? Here's why:

  1. Baltimore based company (but available online)
  2. Realistic serving size (I can finish a bottle with my lunch at work)
  3. Great mission (#sailwindward)
  4. Creative flavor options and of course it is delicious
  5. The ingredients are on the front of the label, plain as day
  6. Great pricing (no more $12 bottles for those other companies)
  7. The founder, Dana is pretty freaking awesome. (I got to meet with her it is was a blast)

Gundalow Juice is indeed a must try. I will be accepting thank you notes and messages once you have tasted the goodness of this juice (haha).

You Are Very Welcome!

Zeke's Coffee

Shavise Glascoe

IMG_7207.jpg

As a busy mom and working professional, I have a love/need relationship with coffee. I love the taste, aroma, varieties and I need it to survive and to be a better person. I also love and appreciate good coffee that is super easy to get my hands on. Easy as in they are down the street and around the corner from my home.

Although convenient, the convenience is not why I love Zeke's Coffee. One absolutely amazing thing about having a small batch roastery in your neighborhood is that the entire block smells like coffee first thing in the morning (and sometimes randomly throughout the day). And boy does the flavor and quality NOT disappoint. One cup and I was hooked.

In being a few minutes (literally a few minutes) away from my home, Zeke's Coffee was one of the first local businesses that I discovered when I first started my culinary adventure here in Baltimore. With that being said, Zeke's will forever hold a  special spot in my coffee loving heart. If you are here in Baltimore and have yet to be Fueled by Zeke's, be sure to do so soon and very soon. You definitely won't regret it.

Hex Ferments

Shavise Glascoe

When I first moved to Baltimore, I became obsessed with exploring everything BALTIMORE. From crabs to UTZ chips to putting OLD BAY on everything, I was fully committed to the cause. In my adventures I noticed that there was another thing that the locals here couldn't get enough of, SAUERKRAUT! I mean they always find a way to put sauerkraut on any menu, in any dish and for anytime of the year.

Along with being new to the city, I was also newly married to a Baltimore man, which means his mother is a Baltimore woman, which means you better bring some Sauerkraut to the holiday dinner. With that now on my shopping list, I looked around and decided that I wanted to go high end with my Sauerkraut and blow people's minds (I guess that's something you care about when you're first married).

I passed by Hex Ferments while on one of my regular trips to the Belvedere Square Market and decided to give them a try. I wish I could tell you that I got the Sauerkraut and the dinner went great, but the only thing true about that statement would be the great dinner. I kind of, sort of, got distracted by EVERYTHING else they had to offer. Yes, that same distraction you experience while shopping at Target. You have one thing on your list and get everything BUT that one thing.

First on the list: Butterfly Lime Kombucha. Can I just say WOW. Not only is this a beauty to look at, but it is also delicious and good for you. One small sample of that and I was locked in. The next thing to catch my eye was their Okra Pickles. Yes, a crisp okra pickle does exist in this world and it is absolutely wonderful. After a few more delicious samples I then realized that they would have me as a customer for life (well as long as I am here in Baltimore, which is looking like for life).

By the way, their sauerkraut, which I did not try until later, is amazing! Go check them out today!

You're Welcome!

The Charmery

Shavise Glascoe

If you want simple ice cream, The Charmery is not for you. After hearing a few of my friends rave about the amazing ice cream that they had there, I had to give it a try. Obviously with a blog named FLAVOR and Soul, I'm into trying new flavor combinations. This place had all of that and then some.

The Charmery definitely does not make selecting a flavor easy. There are simply too many desirable choices on the menu. After trying a few samples, I decided to go with the Old Bay Caramel.

When it comes to love you typically hear people speak of love at first sight, well this was love at first taste. I also really appreciate how they were able to take the limits off of Old Bay and incorporate it into a caramel ice cream. Let's just say that after my first visit, I became addicted. So now whenever I'm in Hampden, I have to stop by and grab a pint to go. A definite must try if you are in the area.

Jinji Chocolate

Shavise Glascoe

Like any other woman out there, I LOVE (and adore and cherish) CHOCOLATE. But after years of binging on the chocolate that you find in any checkout lane, I grew tired of it. I was over the same old flavors and brands. After hitting that taste bud wall, I began to seek out more exotic forms of chocolate. I needed more flavor profile options and better quality. I was successful in finding a few brands that I still love to date. But then there was Jinji Chocolate!

Old Bay Pralines with salted celery garnish

Old Bay Pralines with salted celery garnish

One minute I'm in the Belvedere Square Market minding my own business and the next I end up at this glass case filled with beautiful pralines. I'm pretty sure the guy working there thought I was a crazy woman. (Yeah, crazy about chocolate!!) Well, I chat it up with him for a little while and purchase a few pralines that sounded pretty cool. I get home, I kick up my heels and take a bite and BOOM, magic happens. I've never had something so flavorful, so well crafted and wonderful come from such a small piece of chocolate.

Now, I'm sure that we've all had some good chocolate in our lives, but how about guilt free, totally healthy chocolate? Yes, I can't mention Jinji without mentioning that they produce raw, organic, unrefined chocolate. Don't believe me? Go check them out and be amazed.

You're Welcome!
